What Does It Mean To Be Awake?

I snuck out of the tent early this morning, somehow crawling over my husband without waking him, jumped in the car and drove deeper into Grand Canyon National Park. I pulled the car over at this picture perfect spot, just me and the ravens. It was peaceful, beautiful, and magical.
As the sun slowly rose I was wishing I had woken up sooner and made some coffee to savour while enjoying the beauty of the day’s first rays of golden light slowly inching their way up and over the Canyon walls. As I longed for my caffeine hit I found myself pondering what it means to be awake, like fully awake, without coffee!
The constantly changing colour of the Canyon walls was a beautiful reminder for me that time is always moving forward, that life is ever changing. Bernard Williams said “there was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope” Maybe, being fully awake is as simple as just being present to what is, without judgement or a need to change it. Maybe all that is required in difficult times is to remind ourselves this to shall pass and the sun will rise again.
I know that I now have many more good days than bad in my life. What’s changed? Well I am far more careful about what and who I allow into my life. I make time for quiet reflection and I constantly create and re-create my life on a daily basis. I choose to live my life in a way that energizes and inspires me, and while I don’t always get it right just like the sun I am slowly inching my way up and over the canyon walls and it a beautiful thing.
