My introduction into the world of infinite possibilities first arrived way back in 1978. It made its debut appearance in the form of a paperback novella written by Richard Bach. The pages were already yellowed, well worn, the cover slightly tattered by the time it found it's way into my possession. It was clearly well used and loved.
It was a tale about a seagull named Jonathan and it should be noted for those who have not read this fine book that Jonathan was no ordinary seagull. Oh sure, he looked like all the other gulls if you one only gazed upon his outward appearance but it was what lay beneath those feathers that made Jonathan unique and make no mistake, he was unique.
You see Jonathan had a dream, it was big and bold. In fact it was so big and bold and far exceeded what the other gulls believed was possible they would not support him in it AND this is what makes Jonathan so damn extraordinary, he went for it anyways. He courageously followed his own path, regardless of what the other gulls thought and said. He bravely followed his heart when the reason were many as to why he should not. He leaned fully into his search for the meaning and purpose of his life.
That one little book had such a powerful impact on my life that all these years later it is impossible for me to watch seagulls in flight and not be inspired to do the same within my own life. Often while I watch them I find my eyes scanning the outskirts of the flock looking for the one gull who is out there doing his own thing wondering if perhaps he/she is the next incarnation of Jonathan.
If you've not read Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach I highly recommend you do so! It is a truly wonderful story of flight and freedom. And on that note I will leave you with this beautiful quote from the book.
"He was not bone and feather but a perfect idea of freedom and flight, limited by nothing at all"
